There are numerous artists that Max feels indebted to, both living and dead. Some he has met personally, and others he has connected with through their work. First and foremost was the renowned New Zealand kinetic sculptor Len Lye, who was also based in New York during the 1970s – he and Max became close buddies. Others include the American modernist painters Mark Tobey, to whom this work is dedicated, and John McLaughlin, Russian suprematist Kazimir Malevich, Japanese Rinzai monk and calligraphic artist Sengai Gibon and Japanese painter Kagaku Murakami.
